Kicking off her career with a Bollywood blockbuster named Mohabbatein in 2000, followed by a series of regional movies, film actor Preeti Jhangiani is now looking for a stint in Punjabi cinema. In Punjab these days, for the promotion of her upcoming Punjabi film, Bikkar Bai Sentimental, along with Jassi Jasraj, Preeti said “good stories and (good) quality of Punjabi cinema” lured her to the north.
The actor, who has worked in numerous Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam films, confesses that working in Punjabi films wasn’t a part of her plans when she started out. “When I started my career in Bollywood, I hadn’t thought I would ever work in Punjabi cinema.
But, now that Punjabi film offers are coming my way, I believe there is no harm in taking them up; after all, cinema is cinema,” said Preeti, who was seen in her first Punjabi film, Sajna Ve Sajna, in 2008.
In Bikkar Bai Sentimental, Preeti plays a character called Jeeti. “It is a good story that talks about raising one’s voice against the flaws in the system,” added she. When asked if speaking a new language posed a problem while emoting, Preeti said it was co-star Jassi Jasraj and other members of the film who helped her rehearse her lines. However, she is also open to undergoing training for achieving proficiency in Punjabi, added Preeti.
Married to film and theatre actor and director Parvin Dabas, Preeti returned to filmdom after delivering her first child in 2011. Saying Bollywood remains very close to her heart, the actor informed that she has a couple of Bollywood projects in her kitty. In Pollywood, meanwhile, Preeti is keeping her options open. “Any good story will be grabbed by me,” she added.
Also present at the promotion of the film was Punjabi singer Jassi Jasraj, who plays the male lead in Bikkar Bai Sentimental, slated to release in April. “In the past, some quality movies have been a part of Punjabi cinema. We hope that this film will add to that list, which is why we decided to make it,” he said, adding that the film portrays the sufferings of the common man in the society, who is forced to fight against wrongful activities after having had enough of them.
